Braves took to the road, travelling an hour south to Trowbridge to face a formidable opponent that had twice beaten Braves two seasons previously. The game began as expected, a high paced physical affair with Braves using the full court to put pressure on the Trowbridge side. Both teams used quick fast breaks together with strong inside play to end the quarter at Trowbridge 22, Braves 17.
The second quarter saw Braves switch to effectively create several turnovers and steals. Trowbridge used several variety of plays to keep their score moving up, whilst Braves worked effectively to shoot from range to close out the half, just a couple of points down.
An increase in intensity began to crack the Trowbridge defence in the second half. Several steals and fast breaks were combined with free throws, jump shots and inside moves to push Braves into a six point lead. However, dropping into foul trouble, Braves ended the half with a two point deficit.
The fourth quarter saw both teams tire from the intensive match, point scoring dropping from both sides as they traded offences and more fouls. The consistent big man presence from Leo IKIN repeatedly going to work in the paint and a tireless almost 'possessed' performance from Jay TAYLOR kept Braves in contention. With three minutes left of play, Braves and Trowbridge were level at 69-69. Strong rebounding and tenacious defending were transferred into an effective offence, where Braves scored both free throws from the line to tie the game at 71-71. Again, Trowbridge missed the return shot, and Braves safely collected and were fouled again, scoring a single free throw to put them ahead 72-71 with 10 seconds left of play. As Trowbridge brought the ball up for another attack, Tom SMITH stepped up his hands with the steal on the half way line, sinking the lay up to put Braves up 74-71. Trowbridge were left clutching at a looping buzzer shot which fell well short, sealing the Braves victory.
An excellent team effort, working as a team on defence and scoring points from all areas to grind out the win! Many thanks to Coach Tomasz RONDA who assisted his club mates to a valuable win on the road. In such a close game it needed nerves of steel and a tactical head to secure the win.
